Why Women Should Quit Smoking

Research has shown that smoking cigarettes is worse for women than for their male counterparts. Women in their middle thirties plus are at risk by ten and a half times that of a non-smoker to pass way because of developing emphysema or other chronic breathing conditions. These conditions are commonly lumped into one category called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, also known as COPD. At one time only men who smoked died of these breathing problems but it is now more common for a woman to die from a smoking related COPD than a man. Changing attitudes in society that allowed women to smoke have not truly been of benefit to the health of these same women.

Women who are smokers will also raise their risks of developing other serious medical conditions. This includes cancer of the kidney, bladder, larynx, esophagus or pancreas. They also double their risk of heart disease. Women who have reached an age where they have already gone through menopause have other health issues that are complicated by smoking. They will find that their years of smoking have affected their bones, causing them to be weaker, less dense, and more brittle. This aggravates the chance of a hip fractures that women who have stayed away from smoking will not have. It also ages a woman terribly as the smoke adds to the wrinkles on her face making her look older and less attractive.

Oddly most women start to smoke as teenagers because they are made to believe that it is a benefit to them. Like boys they often begin to fit in with their peers or because they think it makes them look more mature. But here is where it changes. Girls frequently continue to smoke because they believe that it keeps them slim and sexy looking. They believe the hype that says that smoking acts as an appetite suppressor and is a healthy way to keep their figures. With all the potential diseases and the high risks to their health women need to think twice before they light up.
