Some Morning-After Cocktails for Hangovers

The “Poor Man’s Bloody Mary” includes 5 ounces of tomato juice, three ounces of light beer, salt and pepper, plenty of lime juice, and a dash of Tabasco. While the tomato and lime juice may replenish some fluids and nutrients you lost while drinking, keep in mind that drinking more alcohol may only prolong your misery.

The traditional “Blood Mary” calls for 1.5 ounces of vodka, some lemon or lime juice, Worcestershire sauce, a few drops Tabasco, pepper, salt and celery salt, and again 5 ounces of tomato juice. Add spices, vodka, and juice to a glass with ice. Again, the juice may help perk you up, but more alcohol has its own side effects. Other versions include using tequila, gin, aquavit instead of vodka, V8 juice instead of tomato, or skipping the alcohol entirely.

If you like smoothies, you can try a “Banana Cow”. Take one banana, two tablespoons powdered sugar, 3 ounces of milk, and 1.5 ounces of rum, and plenty of ice. Blend together until smooth and then drink.

If you are looking for drinks that do not involve more alcohol, there are several of those to try as well.

In the morning, strain the juice and drink.

If you can stomach it, a “Prairie Oyster” is a popular drink. You need olive oil, a tablespoon of ketchup, an egg yolk, salt, pepper, Tabasco, Worcestershire sauce, and vinegar or lemon juice. Rinse your cocktail glass with oil. Mix everything but the egg together and add to the glass. Carefully add the egg.

Lastly, you can make a “Van Diemen”. You will need two cups of Ovaltine, chocolate topping, 2 cups of castor sugar, 3 tablespoons of golden syrup, a packet of pineapple jelly crystals, 2 cups of hot water, and two or three cups of whole milk. Combine the Ovaltine with sugar, topping, ¾ of the milk, hot water, and syrup. Microwave for 2 minutes on high, then stir for one minute and add remaining milk. Add half of the jelly crystals and microwave for an additional 30 seconds. Add the rest of the crystals and a little more water, microwave for a minute, poor into cups, and refrigerate. Serve with custard when cooled.

Whether or not these recipes will help is up to debate, but they should not hurt any worse than the hangover you are suffering from. So it is always worth a try!
