Before You Fix Your Bad Breath, Find Out What is Causing It

The number one rule to fixing bad breath, or halitosis, is to pin down he cause of it. Bad breath can be the result of any number of things. This is what can make it so difficult to stop bad breath in the first place. In the great majority of cases, bad breath is nothing more than the result of an unclean mouth. Every time you eat something, tiny particles and food debris gets trapped in your teeth and gums. Plaque begins to form on the surface of your teeth as soon as you stop brushing them. These things, coupled with other factors, result in bad breath. However, chronic halitosis can also be the result of a more serious underlying medical condition. If you find that your bad breath will not go away no matter what, it is important that you pay a visit to your health professional to test for more serious systematic conditions that can be causing your chronic halitosis.

Here are three easy ways to keep your mouth clean and fresh. For most people, following these tips will result in a clean and fresh mouth and breath.

1. Practice good oral hygiene to keep your mouth as clean as possible. This means that you should brush your teeth for a full two minute at least twice a day. You will ant to make sure that your teeth feel very clean after you are done brushing. If they still feel gritty, sticky or just not completely clean, whip out the old toothbrush and give them a second brushing. Of course, good oral hygiene always includes nightly flossing. There is no better way to truly remove food debris and bacteria trapped between your teeth and below the gum line than to floss on a regular basis.

3. Drink water to keep your mouth nice and moist. A dry mouth harbors bacteria and germs much more than a wet mouth. Saliva actually performs a real cleaning action that keeps your mouth clean. When you wake up with terrible morning breath, you can blame that on the lack of saliva that your mouth has experienced overnight. Reduced saliva flow almost always results in bad breath. An easy way to counter morning breath is to keep a bottle or glass of water by your bedside and drink after waking up. This can also work if you need a quick mouth cleaning in between meals and do not have access to a bathroom or toothbrush.
