First, you will want to research a place that is a good fit for you. Friends and family members may have recommendations to get you started, however, keep in mind that they are only opinions and you should still go and see the place for yourself.

There are other ways that you can find out about care homes. The groups that are responsible for ensuring that the homes meet government requirements can give you information on the ones that they work with. Groups that specialize in working with the elderly will also have lists. Even your doctor might be able to give you some recommendations.

Different groups can run care homes, and you may see different styles depending on who is in charge. It may be local groups, volunteer organizations, or even private businesses that run the care home. Those that are run by volunteer groups may have restrictions as to who can join – for instance, if it is run by a certain church, access may be limited to those who are of the same religion.

Different authorities may regulate your nursing home, depending on who runs it. Many are also required to have inspections to ensure that the safety and standards of the nursing home are being maintained. You should be able to obtain copies of all inspection reports, licensing, and other paperwork by contacting the nursing home. If they are unwilling to provide such information, you may want to consider looking elsewhere.

Another consideration when choosing a nursing home is the type of care they provide and the type of care that you need. They have to have clear guidelines as to what sorts of patients they will accept. Most will give you personal assistance as needed, such as with washing and dressing. If you are bedridden or have a medical condition that requires close monitoring, you will want to find a nursing home that also provides nursing care. These will have a doctor or a nurse on call around the clock. If you have a specific condition, such as Alzheimer’s, you may have to find a nursing home that is specifically geared for this sort of patient. These will have the training and resources needed to care for specific illnesses so that they can give you the care you need.

If you need help finding a nursing home that will suit your needs, your local department of aging should be able to assist you. Other groups that work with seniors and/or specific conditions may have good recommendations as well. Friends, family members, church members, etc., may also be able to assist you with finding a place. Take some time to look at several options before making your decision so that you know you have the right place for you and your needs.
