When to See a Doctor for Your Acne

No matter how bad your individual case of acne is, you may want to consider having it checked out by your doctor or dermatologist. Left untreated, acne can lead to visible and unsightly scarring. It also can leave emotional scarring, as any teenager that has been labeled a “pizza face” can tell you. Your doctor or dermatologist can help you figure out the best course of treatment for your individual case of acne.

If you are undecided about whether or not to see your doctor about your acne, there are some definite times when you should think about it. If your acne condition has progressed to the point where you are embarrassed by it, or has left scarring on your face that makes you anxious about the way that you look, you may want to get it checked out. If you feel that your self-esteem has lowered, or you are suffering from depression or other emotional stress from your acne, then it may be time to talk to your doctor. If you have already tried several different over the counter remedies for acne and none have worked, then you may need a stronger, prescription medication for your acne. If your acne pimples are causing scarring to your face or body it is time to get them looked at. And, if your acne is painful when touched or washed, or you have repeated breakouts in the same area leading to inflammation or infection, it is time to see your doctor.
